Smallvillains 4×6: Transference

This week, the return of Smallville to new episodes was delayed, so after last week’s hatefest, Uzi and I sought comfort in the arms of John Glover with Transference, where Lionel and Clark switch bodies.

Seriously, how many episodes of this show involved people getting possessed by other people and nobody being able to tell that it was the same thing that happened last Tuesday? I’m going to guess “a large percentage of the whole.” Either way, it was pretty enjoyable, mainly because Glover plays Tom Welling like a lamb lost in the woods.

Smallvillains 6×11: Justice

In this week’s installment of Smallvillains, Uzi and I watch the much-requested episode with the Justice League, and we are not pleased.

Seriously, we asked you guys for something that was actually good, and this is what we got? Yeesh. And while I might manage to reserve my anger for the episode itself, I’m pretty sure this was the one that made Uzumeri hate the entire enterprise. So enjoy our suffering! You guys tend to do that.

Smallvillains 9×13: Warrior

We’ve still got two weeks before Smallville returns to new episodes, so this week, our grand tour of alleged “classics” returns with Season 9’s “Warrior,” which features a magic comic book, Zatanna, Lois in increasingly pandering costumes, and even with all that manages to somehow be absolutely wretched.

We need a palate cleanser after this one, so for next week’s column, we’re looking for the best, most actually straight up good episode of the show to watch. Leave us suggestions over at CA!

Superman #707: Chris Roberson and the Big Turnaround

It’s been a while since I’ve straight up reviewed a comic book — which seems pretty weird for someone whose job it is to review comic books — but today, I sit down with Superman #707, in which Chris Roberson takes over after the massive flameout that was J. Michael Straczynski.

I liked the issue a lot, especially as it relates to Roberson’s stated influences, and I do my best to illustrate the connection and the contrast for the people out there who just didn’t get why this was a departure from what “Grounded” has been about thus far. I will say, though, that I could’ve done without Sexy Trail Guide Lois Lane, but the world don’t move to the beat of just one drum.

Oh, and for the record, “clustercuss” was one of the won’t-get-me-fired synonyms for “clusterfuck” that I solicited from readers on Twitter. Also suggested was “tanglebang,” which I like enough to start using in my day-to-day.

Smallvillains 3×6: Relic

This week, our tour of the first 9 seasons of Smallville continues with an episode that we picked for the sole reason that it sounded insane: Season 3’s “Relic,” in which Jor-El comes to Earth to get his swerve on in 1961.

I don’t want to spoil anything, but this may actually be the first episode that we’ve watched where we could not find a high point that did not directly relate to our well-known Male Gaze.

Ask Chris #39: Superman, Continuity and You

Today at ComicsAlliance, Ask Chris returns and I use a simple question to launch into a barely relevant discussion of THE PROBLEMS. So, you know, back to business as usual.

Also, for the record, I like more than one Cure song, but there’s one that I can never remember the title of, despite the fact that said title is in the actual song, and I’m always asking Kevin what it is, hence me closing the article with a question that will be funny to exactly two (okay, one) people.

It’s good to be back.

If you’ve got a question you’d like to see me tackle, put it on Twitter with the hashtag #AskChris or send an email to comicsalliancea at gmail.com with [Ask Chris] in the subject line!

Smallvillains 4×8: Spell

When we were asking around for recommendations on what Smallville episodes we should be watching, the most-requested episode was “Spell,” in which Lois, Lana and Chloe are possessed by the ghosts of witches.

The thing I can’t figure out is why this was never identified as the greatest thing ever. Click above to find out just how much I loved it (and how much Uzi hated it) for being a sexed up Silver Age comic brought to life on TV!
