Yes, that is real. And what’s more, it actually came out this week. Even better, it came out in one of the digests, and since everything but the lead story in an Archie digest is a reprint, that means that, unless some clever Dan went in and updated Jughead’s shirt from its original “Where’s The Beef?”, that it may have actually happened in the full-size mags months ago.
Either way, I’m calling it: At only a year and a half since the event being referenced, this is the most current pop-culture reference that Archie Comics have ever made, beating out the same issue’s American Idol joke by a good five years.

There has to be an old Archie issue out there somewhere in which Jughead tells one of the gang: “I drink your milkshake!” Possibly years before There Will Be Blood was even released.
Really, the odds of that must be fairly good…
Archie probably did have the milkshake line, but as an out of date Albert Fall reference rather than a prescient There Will Be Blood One
That “it means emotional” line will never, ever stop being funny. EVER.

Makes me think that these stories are cranked out by the hundreds, if not thousands, filed chronologically and then pulled out of the cabinet drawer in date order to be published whenever there is room in the schedule.
It’s probably significant that on the rare occasion that Archie comics references a semi-contemporary catchphrase, they choose the one that makes fun of a guy who has excruciating, torture-level pain inflicted on him for mildly (if that) disturbing the peace (or, “exercising his first amendement rights”) and that implicitly works to normalize the routine use of tazers. Let’s just say I wouldn’t want to be caught jaywalking in Riverdale.
Why do you think it’s so idyllic?
I’ve always assumed that Riverdale is being run by Doctor Doom, or Number 2, or some megalomaniac with a emotional damping device. (Which works on everyone except Betty.)
Or maybe Archie and the Punisher just kept in touch.
