Friday Night Fights: Batroc the Leap Day!
February 29, 2008 | Posted by Chris Sims As I’m sure you’ll notice if you check your calendar, it’s February 29th, a day that only comes around once every four years. Needless to say, this is an occasion that even the Cosmic Powers of Ass-Kickery must pause to celebrate.
And really, there’s only one way to celebrate both Leap Day and fighting…

Cap is so polite — even when he’s getting a facekick from, well, Batroc.
Really, you’d think he was Canadian.
Well, I was going to use the one from War & Remembrance, but, you know.
Wait, Batroc beat Cap? Is that why he died–of embarassment?
Sacrebleu! Grammatically correct French in a comic, somebody should warn Chris Claremont!

I commend you on your perfect French. It’s not often I see it in connection with the comic book world.
When I was a kid, Batroc the Leaper was my super fav’ritest villain ever – I just genuinely thought he was cool, for some reason. I was a mark for all the Marvel throwaway villains (your Trapsters, your Stiltmen), but Batroc – MAN!
I am now going to be happy all day.

I also, am amazed by the French skills on display this post.
It should come as no surprise to anyone that three years of High School French have only paid off for me in my ability to discuss Batroc.
Huh, and 4 years of Spanish have only paid off for me in my ability to discuss El Santo y Mil Mascaras
Seriously, your french is better than 99% of what is usually seen in comics.
Why is it so hard to call someone french to backtranslate? I’ll never understand…
Story behind this fight, as I remember it: Cap’s shield was stolen and Batroc was employed by the guy who did it. Zartan and Machete had bet big bucks that Batroc could never beat Cap. Batroc refused to tell Cap who had his shield (mercenary’s code of honor or somesuch)until Cap said: “tell me, and I give you one free shot, as hard as you like.”
Batroc took the deal. Unfortunately for him, Cap got up….
When I looked at the panel of Batroc doing his flying kick at Captain America, my immediate thought was “just Shoryuken him, Cap!”
I have been playing too much Dreamcast this weekend.
Prior to this issue, “Batroc’s Brigade” was a rotating cast of clods who followed everyone’s favorite Gallic Head-Kicker. This issue was the first appearance of the now-fixed roster of Batroc, Zaran, and Machete.
It’s a brilliant roster. Aside from matched power levels (all three are tough-guy asskickers with gimmicks), they provide a smorgasbord of hilarious comic-book accents. Batroc’s excruciating franglais, coupled with Machete’s “high school Spanish” Latin accent and Zaran’s “high school drama club” English accent?
Hells to the yeah!
