Chris vs. Previews: May 2010

It’s that time again: A new month brings another 500 pages of the Previews catalog, and as always I am your helpful guide to the wonders within.

And this month, there are wonders indeed, from the cybernetic Jane Wiedlin to an RPG that I am pretty sure fills the last available pen-and-paper gaming niche possible. Enjoy!

  1. Comics Alliance ate this comment twice, so I am going to put it here instead.

While the Hellcats and Hockeysticks RPG is definitely more specific, there have been other similar school-based RPGs.

The first – all the way back in 1982 – was Alma Mater:

You played anarchist students bent on destroying the school and Cheerleader was a character class! It was considered incredibly racy at the time and was hard to find or buy. You were more likely to find it in a head shop racked next to the Fabulous Furry Freak Briothers than in a gaming/comic book store.

The other school RPG that was similar in tone: Teenagers From Outer-Space where you played either a human kid dealing with aliens enrolled in your school or an alien kid trying to fit in. Heavily influenced by anime.

As the Wikipedia article notes TFOS was very influential in the development of the biggest anime role-playing game Big Eyes Small Mouth.,_Small_Mouth

Not that I need to say it, but yes I am INCREDIBLE geek.

  2. Dr. Solar looks like half the superheroes I made up when I was ten. Bet he can do LITERALLY EVERYTHING with his powers, too.

  3. @Danicus: From what I recall of the Dr. Solar/WildC.A.T.S. cross-over where he made-out with and then merged with Void, something like that…

  4. I never thought I knew Dr. Solar, and I know way more comic characters than can possibly be healthy.
