I Interviewed Eddie Argos!

Today at ComicsAlliance, it’s probably one of the most unexpected things I’ve ever done for the site (because really, writing fan-fiction about Dr. Doom swearing vengeance on the Gathering of the Juggalos is pretty much par for the course): an interview with Art Brut frontman Eddie Argos about his (alleged) new side project, Spoiler Alert!

I’ve been a huge Art Brut fan ever since my pal Tug brought a copy of Bang Bang Rock & Roll into the store way back when we used to work together, so this was pretty awesome, especially given how much I love his other new project with Dyan Valdes, Everybody Was In The French Resistance… Now!

It’s a band with a premise, in that Argos is writing responses to pop songs he doesn’t agree with, starting with Martha and the Vandellas’ “Jimmy Mack” and moving on to stuff like “Gold Digger,” “Billie Jean” and Avril Lavigne’s “Girlfriend” (my favorite of the bunch). Essentially, Argos is applying his love of pop music to the format in the way that people who love comics apply themselves to super-heroes. He’s retconning pop songs. And that’s awesome.

Plus, this interview apparently had his favorite interview question ever, which goes to show that if you work at it long enough, knowledge of Armageddon 2001 actually will come in handy.

  1. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. With the “Booster Gold” song and my Booster Gold Fan Club t-shirt, I’m a happy man. Now I need a bowl of Booster-O’s in the morning, a plush Skeets, and a Boostermobile to round things out nicely. There are seriously awesome lyrics in that track, like

Then he has to pretend to be dead
    He’s actually Supernova instead
But it’s all part of his strategy
    to save 52 realities

Although at the end… (Spoiler Alert!)

…does the singer say “and his Dad’s Rip Hunter?” Maybe I’m not hearing it right, but it should be “and he’s dad to Rip Hunter.”

  2. Technically, he also tried to build a club on Kooey Kooey Kooey not hawaii but I guess that’s not nearly as wrong as “his Dad’s Rip Hunter”

Still though, this is awesome. I love Art Brut so I couldn’t have been more with Spoiler Alert. I like how straight forward the Batman one is and then at the end he just goes, “And now I’m Dick Grayson.”

  3. Oh holy crap, Art Brut was one of my favorite bands BEFORE I heard “DC Comics and Chocolate Milkshakes.” This might just put Eddie Argos into my Top Five Humans On Earth.
