Ask Chris #27: Why I Love Spider-Man

It’s that time again, where I get an article by answering your comics and comics culture questions! This time around, someone asks me just why I like Spider-Man so darn much, and while I had hoped that this would be the article to prompt CA Editor Laura Hudson to pound her desk and demand I give her more pictures of Spider-Man, that was sadly not the case.

One thing I didn’t get around to mentioning, though, was that an incredible amount of what I love from Spider-Man comes from his supporting cast, which is easily the best in comics. After all, you don’t get to love a character without also loving the stuff that comes with him. I love Batman because I also love Alfred and Commissioner Gordon and the Joker and (of course) the KGBeast, and one of the reasons I love Jimmy Olsen so much is that I really like Superman and Lois Lane and Lex Luthor, too. But nobody — and I do mean nobody — comes close to having the supporting cast Spider-Man’s got, if for no other reason than the undeniable fact that J. Jonah Jameson is the single greatest supporting character of all time.

If you’ve got a question you’d like to see me answer, just put it on Twitter with the hashtag #AskChris or send an email to comicsalliance at gmail.com with [Ask Chris].

BUT! Next week, there will be no Ask Chris column, because we’re once again taking this show on the road!

It’s the return of Ask Chris Live, next Saturday at the New York Comic Con! We’re having a huge ComicsAlliance panel from 5 to 6 PM in Room 1A24, and it’s going to be a lot of fun. We may — may — even have some pretty sweet stuff to hand out to fans. So come on out, we’ll love to see you there!

  1. As my two favorite blog celebrities, I fully expect to see you and Unemployed Skeletor either battle to the death, or at the very least get into some sort of a pop-and-lock dance off where everyone learns something about the meaning of teamwork. If we can get a cosplay Bayonetta to referee I think I can die happy. :)

  2. Hopefully Twitter Batman can help you out there, Mr. Sims. I’m afraid your editor is gonna pwn you with that hammer. ;)

  3. Not only is J. Jonah Jameson the best supporting character of all time, but JK Simon’s potrayal of him in the movies is just amazing. He didn’t get a ton of screen time, but he literally looked and acted like he just walked out of the comic book.

  4. No joke, for the longest time I wanted a series that just followed the day-to-day of the Daily Bugle, with Jameson, Urich, and maybe Betty Brant as the primary characters. Sort of like what they did with Gotham Central.

  5. Peter Parker’s life sucks. Because this is the guy whose inventions – like the super-strong sticky web fluid and spidertracers – could earn him thousands and who dates and later marries (and then mystically unmarries) a model. :)

Anyway, another great thing about Spidey is his rogues gallery, second only to Batman (perhaps).

  6. I dunno. I used to be a huge Spider-Man fan as a kid, but I prefer the idea of him to the reality now that I’m an adult. I’m just sick of him being a loser all the damned time. Dude had an incredible wife and whined about it until they took her away. The Aunt May is at death’s door is so old even Death can’t feign interest. Spider-Man always seems like he’s being buffeted by events he can’t control and while I could identify with that as a kid, now that I’m a man I expect him to actually take charge of his life at some point.

And I hate the costume. The black was cool as a snowman’s nose.
