Ask Chris #36: The Best Version of Superman’s Origin

Another Friday brings another installment of my weekly comics culture Q&A column, and this time around, I tackle Superman’s origin, why we never, ever need to see it again, and which of the 24,000 versions floating around out there are actually worth reading!

If you’ve got a question you’d like to see me answer in a future column, just tag it on Twitter with #askchris, or send an email to comicsalliance at gmail.com with [Ask Chris] in the subject line!

  1. One of my favorites is the sequence in Dave Gibbons and Steve Rude’s WORLD’S FINEST#1 where they recapped Supes’ and Bats’ origins side-by-side in 2 completely “silent” pages.

  2. @notintheface: I had completely forgotten about that miniseries — but as soon as you said it, those 2 pages popped into my head, clear as day. Great stuff.

Definitely falls outside of “canon”, but screw it — it’s a fun read. (Lot of good Christmas panels in that series, Chris (hint, hint).)

  3. Giving the nod to Man of Steel over Birthright? Man of Steel definitely deserves props for getting the line going in the right direction (post-Crisis), but I think Birthright is the Superman origin to read for ever and ever. Reasons for each and every Superman trope, some of the most likeable Superman characterization outside of All Star, excellent Lois, and a “Year One” adventure that combines Luthor and Krypton in a way the movies could try to do three times in a row and fail at by comparison. Birthright is one of the best DC graphic novels in existence… which is why Geoff Johns blew it up (you maniac) and wrote a newer even betterer one. :[
