Ask Chris #7: Archie and the League of Skull-Faced Villains

Friday afternoon brings another installment of my weekly Q&A column, Ask Chris! This time around, I offer up my thoughts on the big development of Archie’s first openly gay character! Plus, I arbitrate a three-way dance between a trio of skull-faced rudos and get put into an awkward position when Awesome Hospital artist Matt Digges asks me who’s at fault in a bad comic: The writer or the artist?

My answer will not shock you.

As always, if you’ve got a comics or culture question you want to see me tackle, slap it on Twitter with the hashtag #askchris, or send an email to comicsalliance (at) gmail.com with [Ask Chris] in the subject line! And if I don’t get around to your question, keep trying. I run up against deadlines, after all.

  1. I assumed the “gay character in an Archie comic” thing was some kind of a joke, but I can honestly say that this is the first time in a long time any piece of comics news caused to pause and say “Holy shit!” Maybe you have to have read Archie comics as a kid to fully grasp why this is huge, but it is. I also doubt he’ll stick around for any length of time, but the fact that Archie Comics, a company that has always been at least 20 years behind the times, thinks they can introduce a gay character w/o causing an uproar… this means something.
