War Rocket Ajax #43: Mass Effects With Colleen Coover

At this point, we all know that Colleen Coover is a pretty fantastic comic book creator, but what you might not know is that she loves the hell out of some video games. And since Euge and I feel the same way, we asked Colleen back on the show to talk about nothing but games! So, you know, if there’s anyone out there who loves comics but just hates video games, uh, well, you should probably skip this one.

The rest of you, however, can enjoy Colleen raving about her love for Mass Effect, Dragon Age, her resistance to Red Dead Redemption, and my often-quoted love of Rockstar’s Bully: Scholarship Edition.

Just be glad I didn’t get Pokemon until after we finished recording.

It was great fun for us to have Collen back as our second-ever three-time guest, because she’s seriously one of the nicest, most fun people to talk to, and if you guys like it, we might try branching out into more theme shows (or maybe just more shows where we lament the demise of Tony Hawk Pro Skater franchise later. So let us know what you think, or write up an iTunes review! Unless you don’t like it, in which case…. I dunno, complain about it on your blog or something. That’s what I did!

Ten Video Games That Should Be Comics

Guys, I don’t want to alarm anyone with my revolutionary ideas or anything, but I think I may have discovered that the Internet makes a good vehicle for list-based comedy. Thus, today I’ve put together a list of ten video games that I think would make pretty good comics! Seriously, I’m starting to think that this whole “Top Ten” thing might have legs to it.

Also, I refer to Bayonetta as a sexy lady version of Ronnie James Dio. So don’t miss that.

Brave and the Bold on Wii: You Had Me at “Batman’s Laser Sword”

Today at ComicsAlliance, I’ve got a review of the Brave and the Bold game on Wii that’s about as extensive as you can get when you’re dealing with a side-scrolling beat-’em-up.

One thing that struck me about it that I didn’t mention in the article is that this is totally the kind of game I would’ve gone over to a friend’s house to play, and the fact that anyone who owns this game would always want to be Batman would’ve meant the destruction of a childhood friendship. And I think that’s the kind of gaming experience Batman would want.

8-Bit Comics: Ten Super-Heroes Reimagined as NES Classics

Not a lot of people these days are aware of it, but back in the pre-ISB days, when sprite comics roamed the earth like the mastodons of 2004, one of the ways I taught myself PhotoShop was by goofing around with NES sprites — SNES sprites being way too complex for my limited artistic skills. And now, all that digital doodling has paid off with an article on ComicsAlliance where I bring you 8-Bit Versions of Your Favorite Comics!

This one was probably more time-consuming than it looks — you pretty much have to go in and redo the sprites pixel-by-pixel — but it was fun, and while the Batman you see above looks pudgy, I am inordinatley proud of how well I turned Bowser into Bane.

My favorite, though, is the Punisher one. Enjoy!

Chris and David vs. Super Street Fighter IV

Super Street Fighter IV was released this week, and while I’m not actually any good at most fighting games that don’t feature Pikachu as a main character, that fact hasn’t diminished my love of the franchise. That’s why today, I Shoryuken’d my increasingly frequent collaborator David Uzumeri into taking a good look at the new and old Street Fighter IV characters!

As is always the case with David, this was a fun one to write, especially as it wanders off the rails about three or four times, getting into the many pretty offensive caricatures that populate fighting games, the truly awesome NES title Pro Wrestling and, as is inevitable when SF is brought up, the astonishingly bad Street Fighter movie that saw Raul Julia fighting Jean-Claude Van Damme.

So enjoy it, and remember: Dan Hibiki is the strongest.

Street Fighter Legends: Ibuki Preview

Today at ComicsAlliance, we’ve teamed up with Udon Studios to bring you an exclusive preview of this week’s Street Fighter Legends: Ibuki #1, along with an interview with writer Jim Zubkavich!

I was really excited to get the chance to do this one. As I’ve said before, as bad a rep as a lot of video game comics get (and as deserved as most of that rep is), Udon’s Street Fighter comics are pure fun, especially the last two Legends books, Sakura and Chun-Li, largely because they contained the inimitable Dan Hibiki.

Plus, I finally got to ask the question I’ve been wondering since Street Fighter III: What the hell is up with Ibuki’s pants?
