You can send the same gifts to your true love–or casual acquaintances, we won’t judge you here–in the pages of Scott Pilgrim, Captain America: War & Remembrance, Azumanga Daioh, Jack of Fables v.1, and other bizarre corners of my collection.

Special thanks to BitterAndrew.

  1. Man, I was gonna get you all this stuff for Christmas, Chris, but you’ve spoiled the surprise.

Brilliant concept and execution, by the way.

  2. That isn’t Charlie Nozawa’s Super Mario Adventures, is it?

There isn’t still some way to get that in graphic novel form, is there?

    Please?

  3. Oh man, Super Mario Adventures.

If only you had worked Ishinomori’s Zelda manga into this post you would have won my undying love.

    Wait.

That sounded a lot less creepy in my head.

  4. Man, that five golden rings rocked. This is my favorite ISB post ever. That song has a special place in my heart, and now you do too.

(And to the guy who thought he was creepy, here’s my bit of creepiness: I dreamed about Chris Sims the other day…)

  5. Zinda, I find it more important to know how to ask directions to the bathroom in as many languages possible but that’s just me.

  6. Most excellent. And yeah, the 5 gold rings is the best thing ever. Highfather bless us, every one.

  7. #7 is not so much “Swans a-swimming” as “doves a-drowning”. Good job on the turtle-dove though, which should become their canonical name?

  8. I just laughed so hard I woke up my husband when I got to the five golden rings. How did I not see that one coming?

  9. Pure weapons-grade awesome.

Now for the REAL test…can you come up with images for the Allan Sherman (…and a Japanese Transistor Radiooooo) and McKenzie Bros. versions?

  10. Why is Longshot wearing glasses in number 8? :)

And I like number 4, considering it’s actually 4 collie (black) birds and not calling birds.

  11. 1o Lords a Leapin’

    9 Ladies Dancing

8… Fellows with very eighties hair with Oatmeal on their fingers?

  12. 7’s actually the Silver Swan, from a George Perez / Mindy Newell issue of Wonder Woman.

And believe it or not, 8 is actually a maid. Or in this case, a John Byrne mid-80s “punk rocker” gal.

  13. I need to know if that Super Mario Adventures is the same one where Princess Toadstool sent Mario for berries for her cereal in the ocean, and by the time he got back, she had eaten a 5 pound meatball. Also, Big Bertha fish fell in love with Frog Mario.

You are now in the town of FREAKING OUT.
    Population: You

  14. This wrecked my face. Batroc ze Lepair was perhaps a natural for number 10, but back-to-back Blackhawks panels, Super-Mario, and a maniacal Hal Jordan? And an alien “ditty of death” in the middle of a Christmas Carol?!!??

FACT – Vermic is correct. You win the Internet.

  15. Peppy: Zinda, I find it more important to know how to ask directions to the bathroom in as many languages possible but that’s just me.

If you order beer long enough, people start showing you where the bathroom is eventually. You get two-for-one that way.

Too many funny jokes to pick just one, but sharing some love for the (IMO) underappreciated Birds of Prey is teh shiznit. Or something.

  16. I’m a dummy, and I didn’t get it at first. And then I looked again, and I realized that this was quite possibly the greatest thing I’ve read from Chris Sims all week!

  17. You just had to use THAT picture for five golden rings didn’t you.

Congratulations. You made me spray coffee all over my keyboard. I hope it was worth it, mister!

  18. That was amazing. Perhaps I shouldn’t be surprsied that you were able to find appropriate pictures for all 12 days, but I am.

Also, it gladdens me to see that Lady Blackhawk has the same philosophy about languages that I do.

  19. “I need to know if that Super Mario Adventures is the same one where Princess Toadstool sent Mario for berries for her cereal in the ocean, and by the time he got back, she had eaten a 5 pound meatball. Also, Big Bertha fish fell in love with Frog Mario.”
No: that which you refer to were actual comic books (by…Valiant? Don’t remember). Super Mario Adventures was published in installments in Nintendo Power Magazine–you can read it over here:

Anyways…awesome as always, Sims. Where do the Drummers drumming come from, by the way?

  20. #8 isn’t just a maid, but she’s smelling Skrull milk. Which the composers of the song never conceived of.

Your post is so funny it’s almost but not quite unfair.

  21. So Chris, did you know all the lyrics by heart, or did you look up up. Personally, after “five gold rings” I kind of mumble the rest of the way through it.
