Smallvillains 10×9: Patriot

This week, Smallville takes on waterboarding and somehow makes it hilarious, in the way that only Smallville can!

This episode was pretty much the inverse of “Isis,” in that Uzi absolutely loved it, but I was left more than a little cold by the complete and utter nonsense of the script. But it was still better than we’ve seen, and for the first time ever, I actually cared about Aquaman’s wife.

But that was entirely due to the fact that she was pretty ridiculously hot and soaking wet at virtually all times. Way to play to the base, Smallville!

  1. It’s hard to take Arthur/AC/Aquaman seriously after seeing his thoroughly homoerotic debut in the fourth season. And given the nature of “Clex” back in those days, that’s saying something. BTW, did Mera call her honey “Orin,” or did I imagine that?

Also: do you get to see the next episode teaser, or do you cut yourself off from that?

True, but that episode also featured the Erica Durance bikini shot that lingered in the credits for about five years (I think I gave up on the show twice, got drawn back in, and it was still there), so it was mostly balanced out.

Speaking of which – I think the show’s base is more female than male at this point. The only reason they’re getting away with all the comic-inspired insanity is that they don’t have to worry about renewal this year, because I guarantee they’re running off the female viewers who stuck with the show just to see Tom Welling with his shirt off.

  3. (The above also explains the chain of shirtless torture scenes over the past couple of weeks – *that’s* Smallville playing to its base, not Mera)
