The 30 Most Amazingly Terrible VHS Boxes of All Time

Like a lot of people my age, I have a lot of fond memories of the lumbering monolithic creature that was the Video Store, specifically the sun-bleached, often-terrible art of the VHS box. I even own a copy of Fantagraphics’ recent Portable Grindhouse collection!

So needless to say, I lost a few hours this weekend when pal Ken Lowery sent me a link to an extensive collection of VHS box art, and today, I’ve put that time to good use by bringing you 30 of the most amazing, terrible, and amazingly terrible VHS boxes ever, complete with my commentary!

This is well out of CA’s wheelhouse, but despite what you’ll read in the article’s intro, Laura was all for it. All it took was showing her ROBO VAMPIRE, and she agreed that this needed to be shared with the world.

  1. Wow. Hawk the Slayer. Geez, I’d love to see that movie again.

That’s not sarcasm; I really would like to see it again.

  2. Wow, even I’ve never seen half these boxes, much less the films. Hey is the worst of Netflix still coming out, seems like we’ve not seen it in ages.

  3. This post is, by itself, better than the highly disappointing Portable Grindhouse book, which is a lot less fun than it should be. Aside from an only-OK intro about the Age of VHS, it basically looks like a random collection of box art images from the closet of a guy who owned a video store 30 years ago.

  4. I was curious about “Invasion of the Bee Girls”, and looking it up, I find that not only does it also star William Smith, but it was the first script for Nicholas Meyer. As in the guy who directed Wrath of Khan and The Day After.

Ebert gave it 2 1/2 stars.

  5. That’s the most disgruntled snowboarder I’ve ever seen.

I suspect his mullet has something to do with it.

  6. THANK YOU! I’ve been looking for a site of movie covers and couldn’t find them via googlesearch. In particular, I was looking for the one about disturbing covers that were nightmarish concepts in themselves. In particular, I was trying to find this cover in order to support my blog entry about disturbing eyes.
