Wildcard and the Creature In… SO FALLS THE WORLD!

Some of you out there might already know this, given that Jim Shelley posted about it last week on the FlashBack Universe blog, but for those of you who haven’t been keeping up, I’ve got a little announcement to get out of the way tonight.

Let’s face it, folks: I talk a lot about comics on the ISB, and given that I spend a pretty big chunk of my writing time every week in an effort to let you know if the latest issues are any good, there’s a good chance that you might’ve wondered if I can back up that critical eye with any actual talent. Well, pretty soon, you’ll have your opportunity to find out:

That’s right: Coming soon, the Flashback Universe presents The Creature and Wildcard in “…SO FALLS THE WORLD!” by Yours Truly and “Jazzy” Jerry Hinds! It’s thirty-plus pages of all-out action, and like all FBU Comics, it’ll offered up free to download (though you can donate if you want) in .CBR format.

Essentially, the story revolves around the Creature (who is not to be confused under any circumstances with the Thing) and Wildcard (who is absolutely nothing like Spider-Man) having a good ol’ fashioned team up to fight a menace from beyond the stars named Ultrax the Unconquered, who–as you can see from the image above–has one of the best hats in the history of sequential art.

As the first of (hopefully) many stories I’ll be doing for FlashBack, I wrote this one back in January, and while Jim’s been sitting on it until we could find the right artist, I think we really lucked into things when we got Jerry. You guys may remember him as the artist of my pal Chad’s pulp-action comic Danger Ace, wherein a dude jumps out of a plane to kick a zombie King Kong right in the face. Clearly, this was the guy who had to draw my story.

And he’s doing a great job with it. He’s got the first few pages knocked out–pencilled, inked, and colored–and with the action pages coming up, I’m unbelievably excited about seeing what he’ll bring to the table.

And really, can you blame me? Check out his work on one of the few pages that does not feature punching:

Because really: When page one of a comic is a big green monster-man rockin’ the Kangol and eating a hot dog with his girlfriend, you know things are going to be awesome.

Or at least, that’s what I hope. You guys might have a different opinion once it all comes out, but I had a lot of fun writing it. Although now that I think about it, I don’t think anybody actually gets kicked in the face in this one.

And that, I’m sure, comes as a shock to all of us.

More information on the Creature and Wildcard, as well as six full-length comics jam-packed with classic action by Jim, Pierre and the rest of the crew can be found at FlashBackUniverse.com. Also, there’s a blog there with more information on Jerry, including the original concept sketch of Ultrax. Check it out!

  1. Well, I was always curious to know if Stan Lee had a son. I hope Jerry remembers to lawyer up before signing anything.

  2. I loves me some Flashback Universe. Wonderfully colourful designs and, yes, full of ‘gravity’.

I’ve seen “So Falls The World” listed on the FB site for a while now and am eagerly awaiting its release. Would you know when “pretty soon” is going to be?

  3. I don’t think anybody actually gets kicked in the face in this one.

you’re a Skrull, aren’t you? where’s the real Chris Sims?

  4. it looks awesome, but there’s a very unfortunately placed piece of wood in the pile behind Wildcard. Can’t wait, though!

  5. Hee-hee, Lauren. It IS unfortunately placed :P

From what I’ve read between the lines, it seems there are back issues to the FU? Are they still available somewhere?

  6. Chris Sims AGAIN?!
I don’t think anybody actually gets kicked in the face in this one.

It doesn’t sound like your artist is done with the action pages yet, and someone who bears no resemblence whatsoever to Spider-Man could kick someone in the face really easily. There’s still time!

Or is there like a change order and all sorts of paperwork that would need to get done?

  7. It does have something that I think will make up for the lack of kicking, and I’m not just talking about the nigh-constant punches to the face.

As for a release date, I’m not sure. Like I said, Jerry’s still working on the art, but he’s going at a pretty impressive clip. The neat thing about digital comics is their immediacy: After he’s done with the art and we get it all lettered, Jim can put it out the next day if he wants.

And no, FBU back issues (like you read about in the footnotes) are just there for the “flava.”

  8. So what’s up with the Gordanian slaver? He escaped the Omega Men and DC continuity to travel to the Flashback Universe?

Nice strip.. I like it. Just busting your proverbial balls a bit.

  9. Ah, didn’t notice this at first. You mentioned this before in that e-mail before (looking forward to another reply, but with both the ISB and this it’s understandable why it’s not high on the to-do list =P)

I’ve been reading up about the Flashback Universe and it definitely looks interesting. Looking forward to reading the finished story and more from the Flashback Universe.
