About
Chris Sims is an award-winning writer and podcaster, known primarily for his expertise in comic books and pop culture.
Writer
After starting The Invincible Super-Blog in 2005, he became the Senior Writer of the late and frequently lamented ComicsAlliance from 2010 to its closure in 2017. In that time, his “Ask Chris” column was the site’s most popular recurring feature, and contributed to the site’s Eisner Award win for Best Comics Periodical/Journalism in 2015. His frequent columns about his favorite super-hero and his self-proclaimed status as the World’s Foremost Batmanologist also led to appearances on The Daily Show With Jon Stewart, CNN, the Huffington Post, and citations in Glen Weldon’s The Caped Crusade.
Chris has also written X-Men ’92, Deadpool: Bad Blood, and other stories from Marvel Comics, along with cowriter Chad Bowers, as well as Down Set Fight for Oni Press, SwordQuest for Dynamite, and other independent comics. They’re pretty good!
Outside of comics, he wrote an unproduced Batman animated short for Warner Bros. and has worked in narrative for video games, shipping two critically acclaimed titles.
His work has also been featured at Polygon.com.
Podcaster
Since 2009, Chris has been the cohost of War Rocket Ajax alongside Matt D. Wilson. With over 15 years of weekly episodes, Chris and Matt have talked to an incredible roster of guests that includes multiple appearances by Matt Fraction, Patton Oswalt, and other creators and friends of the show. The show’s focus on comics and pop culture also gave rise to the Every Story Ever list, a ranking of every single comic book story ever published from best to worst. As of 2024, the list contains over 1,500 comic book stories, and will continue growing until one or more of the hosts die, likely while still being mad about Identity Crisis.
In 2018, he and Benito Cereno launched Apocrypals, a podcast where two non-believers read the Bible but try not to be jerks about it. In addition to the canonical books of the Old and New Testaments, the show also covers the lives of saints, apocryphal and deuterocanonical religious texts, and somewhat tangentially related media like Bible themed NES games.
He has also hosted Sailor Business, a podcast that covered all 200 episodes of the classic 1990s Sailor Moon anime, as well as its sequel, Sailor Business Diamond, which covers the 2003 live-action show. A spinoff, Xena Warrior Business, covered the six-season run of the action-adventure show, Xena: Warrior Princess.
He’s been a frequent guest on other podcasts, including Retronauts, Hard Choices, and more. He likes to talk.
