Earlier today, it was finally announced that the classic Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is being re-released for XBox Live Arcade and PlayStation Marketplace so that a new generation can experience the watershed 2D fighting game that represents the only time that Cable has ever been useful.
And that means it’s time to celebrate!
Have fun gettin’ that out of your head without a speargun and a shot of grain alcohol, kids.
NOOOOOOOOOOOO
Why do you hate us so?
Why do you hate us so?
First time reading the comments here, huh?
No, but seriously, I wanna take you for a ride.
I want my brain to die now.
that was weird
Can you have me back by 10?
Whoever that Radio Shack keyboard enthusiast is, I hope they only got paid for 5 seconds of music, and then had to watch the cheap bastards at Capcom just loop it to infinity.
No character select music gets stuck in your head faster than that. I only got to play it twice in an arcade but I hear it in my head every time I think of the game. Once the news hit about the tu4ar.com teaser site that Capcom put up, it’s been playing non-stop. Then again, I like the Silver Shamrock jingle, so what do I know?
This nostalgia is crippling. Although, I might prefer the original Marvel vs. Capcom, which would make my brain break with memory. I remember I accidentally broke this game with my knee. I really hope that this isn’t priced ridiculously high, because I’m not going to pay $20 for a game that I can buy for PS2 for $10.
I don’t care what you guys think. I’m dancing in my living room right now. This song is the jam.
I also read US1 for real as a kid. Connection?
You will pay, Chris. You will ryu the day you made us watch this.

You utter monster. I had forgotten. Now it will never leave. My vengeance will know no limit Sims.
Stac
It’s just the same ten seconds of song over and over!
And yet it’s so damn catchy!
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
The computers here at work don’t have sound. So I’m just imagining it has the music from the 1st Zelda. And I’m pretty sure my mom would still be willing to put out a hit on the guy who wrote that…
When I worked at Faceless Game Emporium, someone traded in the PS2 port of this ostensible “classic.” I would put it in the store’s system and let it play for as long as I could stand.
I was later let go after getting in an argument with the manager over whether we should hire gay people (he was of the opinion that we should “take them for a ride” to the execution chambers) but I think I know why I was really let go!
Heh. I am immune to such sonic torture because I once had the underwater theme to Super Mario Bros stuck in my head for three days and it burnt something out in my brain. Also, I know how to click stop after ten seconds pass.
Man, I have fond memories of the original Marvel Vs. Capcom. I remember it shouting “LET’S GO PAYDAY! LET’S GO PAYDAY!” every time I fed it quarters and each character getting their own ending. I’d always fight against my friend Jim’s Captain America & Venom Combo with ‘Team Skeevy’ a.k.a. Morrigan and Gambit. Good times, because even if I lost, good taste won.
As someone who still plays this game regularly, the thought of it providing ‘nostalgia’ makes me feel old and obsolete. Oh well!
Best character select music in the world, other than the SF3: Third Strike rap.
You’ll have to buy me dinner first.
You’ll have to buy me dinner first.
You’ll have to buy me dinner first.
And so on.
F U!!!!!
Can we all agree this is the only good thing to have Onslaught in it ever?
Damn, I may need to get…whatever the hell game system the kids play this on now. I still occasionally play the PS1 Marvel Super Heroes, which I borrowed from my brother-in-law, and he’s never getting that back. NEVER.
I was going to comment, but someone’s gonna take me for a ride, I think…
Considering that the PS2 version sells for around $70 at GameStop and the XBox and Dreamcast versions command similar amounts on Ebay, $20 is well worth it, IMO. This is one of the best games Capcom has ever made, and it’s pretty well-balanced if you forbid the dreaded “Ice Man / Cable / Iron Man” (or similarly beamed-themed) team.
Now, if they’d just put D&D: Shadow over Mystara on XBL… man, that game would be amazing online.
I found it very upsetting that Marvel took the license away from Capcom after this game, keeping us from MVC3 with yet more characters. The inappropriate Smooth Jazz soundtrack to the frantic action reminded me of Sonny Chiba classic “Shogun’s Ninja,” so I didn’t especially view that as a downside. What was the problem, that the games were too fun? That’s not something that happens with licensed properties too often.
I also found it upsetting that they included Felicia from Darkstalkers and not Haohmaru from the Japanese Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter. Ultra Variety Private memories is the only way to hurt someone with Mega Man cosplay.(well, in video games, anyway)
Thank God my Dreamcast still works. I like to play as 3 Dooms, and if I lose insisting that they were all faulty Doombots.
“Lovecraftian Horror”, hahahaha
“I also found it upsetting that they included Felicia from Darkstalkers and not Haohmaru from the Japanese Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter”
Is Haohmaru not just from SNK games or Capcom game ‘Capcom vs. SNK 2’, or am I missing out on a world of Japanese fun?
I realize this is not on topic for this thread, but

is doing an issue by issue analysis of Jack Kirby’s New Gods, starting from Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen #133. Thought der blogmeister and some of the rest of you might be interested.
The ISB: Where Kirby is Always on Topic.
Thrillsss:
No, I just suck. The character is actually Norimaro and I confused his name with the dude from Samurai Shodown. From the wikis:
“Norimaro: An original character created and owned by Japanese comedian Noritake Kinashi who represents neither Marvel nor Capcom. He appears as a regular character only in the Japanese arcade and console versions of the game, but was removed in all the overseas versions. He portrays a nerdish, cowardly schoolboy-type guy armed with a camera; who throws common school items, mini-Gouki dolls, and plushies as projectiles; and would attempt to ask for his opponent’s autograph mid-battle (can be seen when the player presses the START button during a match).”
Cable is so damned overpowered in that game! We ended up making a house rule banning him.
Ohhh gawd, I’d forgotten that song, and now it’s back! Will it ever leave!?
Frowny McBeard – Ahhh, right! I have a vague memory of that character, and my frustration in being unable to unlock him. I have so many slightly sad memories of being unable to unlock things in non-Japanese versions of fighting games…
Maybe it’s about time I got into shoot-em’ ups or something instead.

Thrillsss-
It’s not the worst idea considering how effing many times I had to beat Capcom vs. SNK to unlock Akuma. It’s still less time than I spent playing Symphony of the Night. Most of the reason I don’t play many video games anymore is that I stopped wanting to spend that much time on them.
Anyway, Norimaru’s supers are at the 5 minute mark in this video:

I quite like it in small does though it never took me more than 10 seconds to chose a team and even now it’s not unforgettable. I’m now listening to the clock tower stage.

I want Capcom to get both DC and Marvel licenses and make a JLA/Avengers fighting game.
Just so I can whup Superman’s ass with Thor over and over again.
I’ve been waiting for this game to come back! I happen to love everything about that clip. HOORAY!
I still hook up my Dreamcast fairly regularly to play MvC and MvC 2. I loved those games. My best friend did, after a few battles with me, institute the Comprehensive Cable Ban, since I lit him up on a fairly frequent basis with Cable.
The song never got stuck in my head, though, until now. Go figure.
“I want Capcom to get both DC and Marvel licenses and make a JLA/Avengers fighting game.”
Agreed!
I’ll settle with this game, though.
I would love to see a new MVSC game with Street Fighter IV characters, just so I could kick Wolverine’s ass with Rufus.
I don’t know what you’re all bitching about. This song rules.
It’s funny that everyone derides this soundtrack because I thought it was great. It was like 3 or 4 of the catchiest loops ever in the catchiest game ever.
I don’t get this release. My Dreamcast still works fine and if anyone wants to play Marvel vs. Capcom 2 they can just get a Dreamcast, get the game, get two arcade sticks, and enjoy. Is it really that difficult?
i have one of the coveted PS2 ports, and i still play it pretty regularly.
I’m curious who this girl who wants to take me for a ride is though… i mean, is she hot?
I have already taken you for a ride, but I would not mind doing so again.
Chris, you’re so pringles.
It’s too bad they aren’t going to tweak the game to beef up some of the low tier characters, namely all the Capcom characters.
