Twilight: The Graphic Novel

Today at ComicsAlliance, I’ve been given the task of reviewing the brand-new Twilight GN that just hit shelves yesterday, and while it shouldn’t be a surprise that I was mad enough about it to go on for 1100 words, it’s probably not about what you’d expect.

There’s no amount of art, no matter how pretty–and Young Kim’s art is beautiful–that could turn Twilight into a good story, and I wasn’t expecting it to. But what I got… well, the problem can be summed up in four words:

Times New Fucking Roman.

  1. At least it wasn’t Comic Sans. Or would that be an improvement in this case?

  2. Holy crap!

I was sure that it couldn’t be as bad as you were claiming, Chris. And then I saw the posted images and, in fact, you were right. That’s not just an awful lettering job, it may well be the worst possible lettering job.

  3. Wow. I’m used to manga companies not caring a bit about readability but that’s a whole new level. I think the only worse lettering I’ve seen is in bad webcomics.

  4. I saw that in the Entertainment Weekly preview for the book, but I thought it was just a mock-up or rough draft. I had no idea that was the actual lettering.

And here I thought the GN would at least be readable compared to the novel, since all the droning descriptive text could be dropped in favour of the beautiful manhwa-style art. Ah well, not like Twilight fans have taste.

  5. My god, that’s horrendous. And, for the record, I really hate transparent speech bubbles. Although I don’t really know why….

  6. Geez, I could’ve lettered this book better and, as you can attest by reading my past 30-second recap entries, that’s NOT saying much.
