Smallvillains 6×11: Justice

In this week’s installment of Smallvillains, Uzi and I watch the much-requested episode with the Justice League, and we are not pleased.

Seriously, we asked you guys for something that was actually good, and this is what we got? Yeesh. And while I might manage to reserve my anger for the episode itself, I’m pretty sure this was the one that made Uzumeri hate the entire enterprise. So enjoy our suffering! You guys tend to do that.

  1. I made no such recommendation, sir – you deserve everything you get!

‘Idol’ is probably worth watching for the moment it condenses Smallville to its purest form: the Wonder Twins initialize their superpowers by shouting “powers – ACTIVATE!” and bumping fists together and it’s genuinely awesome because Smallville actually went ahead and did that on tv (I actually remember a lot of complaining about it at the time because it was “too silly” and ruined the illusion some viewers had that they were watching a documentary about an alien with laser eyes), but Clark stops them just as they’re about to charge up and go be actual superheroes.
So basically something entertaining is about to occur but Clark stops it from happening, then tells anyone in the room with an inclination to use their gifts to help their fellow man that they should ignore burning orphanages and instead concentrate on keeping their head down. That is some pure fucking Smallville right there, man.

On the other hand, if I had to venture something potentially not-awful, I’d say the season 6 opener where Clark bangs Lana and totally gets over himself for almost forty full minutes. I wouldn’t go so far as to use the word ‘good’, but I do remember it being the first episode I’d watched that didn’t make me think I wasn’t drinking fast enough.

  2. I told you to do “Transference” or “Checkmate”, but nooooo, you two chose “Justice”. This is exactly why I didn’t suggest it, because I knew you’d hate it and frankly it’s inferior to every team-up episode that followed.

Also, “Transference” is pretty much the start of Lionel’s Heel/Face turn. The reason why is bullshit considering what we’ve seen of Clark’s character before and since, but the episode itself is golden.

  3. Definitely agree with you about how stupid the whole “all superhero costumes must be reinterpreted as hoodies” policy was that this show had at the time. I remember being really annoyed about it when seeing ads and clips of episodes like this (I’ve been a sporadic Smallville watcher at most).
Worse than seeing cheesy Hawkman, Dr. Fate and Stargirl costumes executed literally in all their gaudy goofiness in the JSA appearances?
    Yes. Far worse.

  4. I know I posted late. I know it’s lame to be all “I told you so”. I know it’s an awful combination to be all “I told you so” when you did said telling late.

Nonetheless, you guys really should listen to my late suggestion from the “Warrior” comments, and watch “Memoria”.

  5. Once Smallville finally shudders to a stop, you have to review the sure to be ridiculously awful Wonder Woman pilot. When no network picks it up, it will escape captivity to live a life of infamy on the internet. You know, like Justin Hartley’s Aquaman pilot.

Or worse – imagine if someone is boneheaded enough to order 13 episodes?

  6. To be fair to your commentors, you did ask the impossible. As far as I know, there simply isn’t an ironically good episode of Smallville.

  7. Since “Justice” was the episode I dropped out of my sporadic watching of Smallville, I figured I should point this out…
Lionel’s not lying to his son. He really did eat dinner with Clark. Or someone who looked like Clark, with a real affinity for Oreos.

  8. You watched “Absolute Justice”. You had only yourself to blame for thinking its predecessor might not be horrible.

  9. “I like that any of you think that we will ever take your recommendations again.”

After “Justice”, I can imagine that this statement applies not just to Smallville recommendations.

  10. I totally missed out on advising you, Chris, but I would have gone with “Shattered” or “Transference”.

On the Superman Homepage, there was a caption contest for the “heroes walk away from exploding building” pic. My (losing) entry was “Tom Welling: Compete with ME, will you? Take THAT, Dunder-Mifflin!!”

I stopped watching 3/4 of the way thru season 6 (with some exceptions like the Zatanna and Legion eps), but if memory serves, Clark was busy rounding up wrestlers…er Phantom Zoners that season. It was the network’s lame attempt to cross-promote its then-newly-acquired WWE Smackdown. That may have been a huge part of the reason WHY I stopped watching.
