The 25 Best Action Comics Covers Ever

Today, after 73 long years, Action Comics hits the momentous milestone of its 900th issue, and in order to celebrate, I’ve gone back through all 900 issues to bring you The 25 Best Action Comics covers of all time!

As you might imagine, this took a bit of time — my original plan was to do the best panels, but as it turns out, I can’t read 900 comics in a single night. Who knew? Either way, there’s some good stuff and at least one amazing crown waiting for you over at ComicsAlliance.

  1. Saw your (beautifully succinct) definition of what separates Bronze and Silver Age Superman stories on the ISB Twitter feed yesterday…. and today, this article.

Technology has given us a transparent window to the “idea germination” part of yer brain.

  2. Somewhat surprised not to see: Action #47, where he punches Luthor clear through a three-foot thick brick wall; and most of all #424 where Grodd’s “Grandstand Play” consists of spinning Superman around by the cape on top of a skyscraper.

Least awesome: #466, the demented Neal Adams cover where Luthor has turned Superman into a toddler, and is *sucker-punching him to death with brass knuckles from behind.*

  3. I strongly considered #47, but I love that story in 466 and 467, where you find out that Batman has so much natural athletic ability that he could punch out a bear at the age of 12.

  4. Oh, I love 466/467 too, but that cover outdoes Geoff Johns. Even he has never had a supervillain beat a baby to death with his bare hands. As far as I know.

  5. I would like to see you do a “lesser known best stories” feature for Superman, Chris. There are tons and tons of lists of “Best Batman comics” all over the internet, but it’s much harder to find Superman ones. Not to mention that the ones that turn up always include the same few books – Alan Moore’s comics, All-Star Superman, Death of Superman, Reign of the Supermen, with maybe a handful of Maggin books. It would make a good column, or an Ask Chris.
