The Action Age Comics Never Look Back Never Say Die World Tour 2011 Hits Athens, Georgia!

This Saturday, “Rad” Chad Bowers and I are heading down to Athens, Georgia for the one-day Fluke Indie Comics Show at the 40 Watt! If you’re in the area or nearby, swing by and check out how lazy I’ve gotten in terms of haircuts now that I work from home.

Tables at the show are first-come, first-served, so there’s a chance that we won’t actually be able to have a setup at the show, but if we do get in, you can expect to see us selling copies of the ultra-rare printed edition of Awesome Hospital #1, along with Skullkickers #6, Resurrection #8, and Chad’s even more ultra-rare print-only prequel stories to his smash hit webcomic Monster Plus! Plus, prints, sketches, and other Action Age goodness!

Even if we don’t get a table, we’ll still be hanging out, and it promises to be a pretty fun time. Come out and see us!

WRITE MORE GOOD Is Out Today!

This is it, everybody! FakeAPStylebook’s Write More Good is finally out! No more having to pre-order, you can actually regular order it right now!

Now, this is very important: We’re trying to hit #1 on Amazon today, because really, which would you rather have sitting at the top of Amazon: A book about heaven read exclusively by grandmas, a guide to dieting that charges $14 to tell you not to shove pizza rolls into your face all day, or an entire book of brand-new comedy about commas and homonyms by a bunch of Internet people with a foreword by Roger Ebert? That’s what I thought. And as we learned from the amazing success of Machine of Death, it’s entirely possible.

Right now, the book’s less than nine bucks, so give it a read, tell your friends, and shout it from the rooftops! Today’s the day I got a book out in actual bookstores!

UPDATE: Alas, didn’t make to to #1. “True stories” of Heaven by children and diet books have an unshakable grip on that list that even the mightiest copy editing joke cannot break. BUT, we did make it to Top 10 in Comedy, the top 250 overall and #1 in “Literature and Criticism,” which means we beat Mark Twain. Not too shabby. Thanks, everyone!

WRITE MORE GOOD

Those of you who have been paying attention probably already know that I’m one of the writers behind the wildly popular @FakeAPStylebook twitter feed. And for those of you keeping score, none of the jokes about Batman were actually written by me. The one about The Macho Man Randy Savage, however, totally was.

Anyway, as mentioned on this week’s War Rocket Ajax, WE HAVE A BOOK COMING OUT NEXT TUESDAY!! It’s called Write More Good, and unlike a lot of the Twitter phenomena that manage to con their way into a book deal, it’s not just a collection of tweets that have been printed up and slapped between two covers. Instead, we wrote entirely new material on how to cover various topics from politics to entertainment, a section dealing with style tips and rules that have fallen out of favor since our first edition at the beginning of time (my favorite part), and even got notable film critic Roger Ebert to write us a foreword, which I do not believe he addresses his all-consuming hatred of the Mario Brothers.

If you’d like to see a little more of what we have to offer, then why not read the entirety of Chapter 3: Entertainment Journalism right now?

Write More Good by The Bureau Chiefs – Excerpt

The book will be winging its way to your local bookstore next week on April 5, but if you can’t wait to fork over your green, it’s already available for pre-order on Amazon, which brings me to my next point.

You may be familiar with the fact that David Malk!, Ryan North and the rest of the creators of Machine of Death made a successful bid to get their book at #1 on Amazon on its release date, and we’re attempting to put our meager Internet fame to work for us to do the same thing. Of course, instead of going up against Glenn Beck, we’ll be taking on the new release by Tina Fey. Sure, knocking her out of the top spot won’t quite be as fun, but c’mon. She’s got a TV show. She can deal.

Anyway, it would mean the world to us to take this thing to the top, but even if we don’t quite make it, we’ve created a great book that we’re all proud of. That said, I swear to God that if we make it to New York Times Bestseller status, I will never shut up about it ever. Believe it.

So Hey, I Got a Tumblr

This weekend, I decided to finally hop on the hottest internet trend of 2008 and I got myself a Tumblr, where I intend to compile links and pictures that I find interesting: Twenty Percent Cooler.

“But Chris,” you’re saying because you are the kind of person who objects verbally to things you read on the Internet, “You already have a perfectly serviceable blog! I am looking at it right now!” And that is a true statement, and I’ve spent the last four years making this site your go-to stop for Chris Sims and Chris Sims Accessories. But here’s the thing: Actually posting things on the ISB is a pain.

WARNING: Whining and Sausage-Making follows!

Because I’m super-obsessive about how things look on this site (not that you could tell from looking at it, I know), I code every blog post by hand, and because I don’t trust WordPress to do exactly what I want with my images, I futz with them in PhotoShop and upload them manually via FTP. So even a short linky post (like most of the things I’ve been doing here since I started working fulltime for ComicsAlliance) require me to pop open my text file of useful HTML pieces that I use over and over again and either upload the image that I’ve already uploaded once to CA or remember what its name is if it’s something I’ve previously uploaded (“AHISBLogo.jpg” is one I usually have to type in twice a week, for instance). So if I see a picture I like on the Internet and want to put it up here like I did with Evel Knievel’s ten speed, that’s two additional programs I have to run, plus any resizing and image futzery I have to do in PhotoShop.

I know, I know, I’m whining about having to drag a picture into an FTP client and cut and paste from Notepad. The first-worldest of first world problems. But it’s still more of a pain than it should be to just link to something I wrote, which is probably why I only tend to link to one of the posts I do at CA every day, rather than two. Meanwhile, Twitter and Tumblr make it much easier. Which is partly because I don’t really care if the images on Tumblr aren’t properly aligned or if the spacing is slightly off.

Now, the easy solution would just be to stop caring so much rather than starting fresh with a new platform, but at the same time, I’m always going to care more about the-isb.com than I should. this is what I’ve spent every night working with since 2005 in some form or another. But the hassle of linking to things really isn’t adding much other than just padding out the archives.

Which brings me to The Tumblr Dilemma. I’m considering moving all my linking, self-hype, quick images, pictures of pretty girls, pictures of Pokemon, pictures of pretty girls dressed as Pokemon, short jokes and all over to Tumblr, and then using The-ISB for announcements of grave import or the occasional actual writing. I know some of you have fond memories of when I’d do that, and I still have pictures of New York from last October that I haven’t put up. That way, the ISB gets to be your stop for actual pertinent Chris Sims content, while I still get to link to all my work.

So, peanut gallery: Thoughts?

Watch Me On The Daily Show For Like 20 Seconds

In case you weren’t able to catch my appearance on The Daily Show on Tuesday — or in the extremely unlikely event that you somehow managed to miss my cross-platform self-promotional blitz — don’t fret: you can catch the video here, along with a rundown fro CA’s Andy Khouri wherein the very idea of a Professional Batmanologist confronting bigotry on television is hailed as a sign of the end of Western civilization as we know it. Which it probably is.

Also, I wrote up some thoughts on what the actual experience of filming was like. I did not, however, mention that the while I was hanging out at the TDS offices waiting for my car to the airport, the were totally having a cheesecake party. I was invited to enjoy, but totally full from lunch.

Next time, New York Cheesecake! Next time!

Awesomed By Comics #128: Aaron, Me and Shameless Self Promotion

The Media Bltiz Continues! This week, since the lady half of the Awesomed By Comics crew is out on the West Coast engaging in a serious academic study of KISS (no, really), I got to sit in for this week’s episode, handing out awards to my favorite comics of the week! And I’ll give you one guess what comic wins in almost every category for me (hint: I wrote it).

My boundless ego aside — which I like to think of as endearing but which I’m sure all of you are getting really quite tired of by this point — it’s always fun to be on ABCP, and I had a great time talking to Aaron this week and dishing out comics reviews just like it was 2008 all over again. If you’re an Ajax listener, you’re going to hear me mention some of the same stuff Matt and I covered this week in our brief comics review section, but as Aaron says on the site, we go into “fists of power and Jims of Gordon,” and how could you not want that?

Thanks, Aaron! And enjoy!
